Fifth Street Fire, San Juan Bautista
November 27, 2010

On Friday November 26, 2010, at 20:37 hours, the San Juan Bautista Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a structure fire at 117 Fifth Street San Juan Bautista. 117 Fifth Street is a ten unit, two story apartment complex, in which eight of the apartments were occupied, at the time of the fire. Upon arrival of the Fire Department, a San Benito County Sheriff's Deputy was on scene and had begun evacuated the apartment's that were not involved in the fire. When Fire units arrived Apartment one and six were fully involved with extension into the common attic of the second story. One vehicle in the parking lot in front of unit one was also on fire.

One person was found in the parking lot of the complex with fire related injuries and was treated at the scene by San Benito County AMR and flown by CALSTAR to Santa Clara County Valley Medical Center and is in serious condition.

The Fire was brought under control approximately 30 minutes after it was reported. During the suppression of the fire an unidentified person was found deceased in unit one. The cause and manner of death will be investigated by the San Benito County Sheriff-Coroner's Office.

San Juan Bautista Fire Department requested mutual aid from the Monterey County Arson Task force to assist in the investigation of the fire. Investigators from the Seaside Fire Department and North Monterey County Fire Departments responded to assist. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time and under investigation.

Seven families were displaced by the fire and were assisted by the San Benito Red Cross. The San Juan Bautista Fire Department received mutual aid from the Hollister Fire Department and San Benito County Fire to suppress the fire. The building did not have an automatic sprinkler system.
