City Council

The City Council meets the third Tuesday of each month in Council Chambers at City Hall, 311 Second Street, San Juan Bautista at 6:00 pm. Our City Council consists of five members elected to serve four-year terms.

Chris has been active in the community since moving to San Juan Bautista in April of 2012. He chaired the City’s Strategic Plan Committee, was a member of the Advisory Board for the General Plan revision, helped resurrect the Neighborhood Watch and is a member of the Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club of San Juan Bautista. As part of his City Council responsibilities Chris is a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments (AMBAG) and sits on the Intergovernmental Committee with representatives from the County and City of Hollister. Chris is a native of California and owns a small sales agency in the Marine industry.

Vice Mayor Jim West

Jim has been involved in San Benito County for over 20 years: Elected to the San Benito County Health Care District on a county-wide ballot, appointed to the County’s Parks & Recreation Commission, and served as Vice Chair of the County’s General Plan Update Committee.  Jim served on the Board of Directors for the United Way and received two National Philanthropy Awards as well as the Gavilan College Community Spirit Award and the San Benito Community Leadership Award.

As a San Juan Bautista Councilman, Jim represents the City on the Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO), the Intergovernmental Committee, and the Fire Protection Advisory Committee.

Jim lives in a home he renovated in San Juan Bautista’s Historic District.

Council Member Dan DeVries

Dan has been involved in the local community for over 25 years, first serving as the Chairman of the San Juan Bautista Planning Commission for 14 years, prior to being appointed to the San Benito County Planning Commission where he served for the past 12 years representing western San Benito County. Dan was also a member of the San Juan Bautista Fire Department for 10 years, a founding member of the San Juan Rotary Club, the co-founder of the San Benito Arts Council, and a board member with CMAP, the Marle Holte Holiday Dinners, as well as the San Benito Health Foundation. Past and present memberships include the San Benito Business Council, the San Benito Economic Development Council, the San Benito County Chamber of Commerce, San Juan Bautista Chamber of Commerce and the San Benito County Bar Association.

Council Member John Freeman

A native of Southern California, John has participated in San Juan Bautista civic and community activities since first moving here in 2002. He joined the Strategic Planning Committee when it was first formed and was chairperson of that committee for the past two years. He has also coached 7th and 8th grade basketball at San Juan School for the past several years.  John is currently Chairperson of the Water Resources Board of San Benito County and a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments (AMBAG). He is also member of the Bay Area Environmental Safety Group (BAESG).  He is a specialist in the art of hazardous waste removal, disposal, and remediation and has 20 years of experience in Industrial Water Treatment; he has a small consulting business in those areas.
